BENGALURU: Cesarean section (C-section) deliveries have increased in government hospitals across the state. It is said that C-section deliveries have risen by 40 per cent compared to normal deliveries. Because of this, the Health Department is on alert and has decided to control C-section deliveries.
The Health Department is planning to investigate why C-section deliveries are increasing. They are also preparing to compile a list of doctors who have performed the most C-section deliveries.
Health Commissioner Gurudutt Hegde told Public TV. “C-section deliveries in government hospitals is still less compared to private hospitals. We advise government hospitals to keep C-section deliveries under 40 per cent, but there are instances where it is as high as 50 per cent. We have given instructions to keep C-section deliveries under control and held review meetings also”.
Further, he said, “We are also getting cases where people demand C-section deliveries and there are some other systemic issues also. Doctors say that if the first delivery was through C-section, the second will have to be done the same way. We will have to do a detailed review to to find out the reasons and keep C-section deliveries within reasonable limits”.
“There is also an increase in the number of pregnancies being considered as high risk, which is leading to more C-section deliveries. Urban lifestyle could be a contributing factor for this. Safety of a pregnant woman comes first, but we also have to keep people’s sentiments in mind”, he added.
