MANGALORE: The hijab row at the Mangalore University College at Hampankatte seems to be escalating with some Muslim students insisting that they be allowed to wear the headscarf inside classrooms and in the library.

On Friday, the college development council met and decided that the hijab will not be allowed inside classrooms and library. A separate room will be provided where the burqa and hijab can be removed and kept.

However, on Saturday, about 15 students turned up in burqa and hijab and insisted that they be allowed to wear the headscarf. They even attempted to enter the library, but were stopped by the staff. Attempts by the principal to convince them failed to yield results. The students continued to sit on the campus and read their books.

They have now planned to wait till Monday and then approach the district deputy commissioner for relief.
