BENGALURU: The Solid Waste Management Ltd is making various efforts to protect the beauty of the city and ensure that garbage is not strewn here and there. But serious allegations have been levelled against lower rung officials, who, instead of taking action against those throwing garbage, are illegally taking money to look away.
The GBA is waging war against those who spoil beauty of Bengaluru and throw garbage everywhere by creating awareness among people and imposing fines. Marshals and health inspectors, who catch those throwing garbage in small plastic covers and impose fines, are turning a blind eye to the problem in some parts of the city.
On Nagasandra main road, the owner of e-Arvind Edge, a private upscale apartment complex, had been dumping debris building construction work and garbage since five-six months. The local health inspector and marshal supervisor have noticed this every day, but made no effort to get the garbage cleared. As soon as the negligence of local officials was brought to the attention of higher officials in the GBA, officials turned up at the spot and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the apartment owners.
After instruction of GBA higher officials, local health inspector Triveni and team came to spot. As the apartment owners did not come outside, a garbage auto was called and waste was dumped in the apartment premises. The manager Dilip then to the spot and Rs 25,000 as fine. The garbage was also cleared.
The complainant Girish Gowda told Public TV, “Thousands of people use the footpath, but debris had been dumped over a vast area. There was some dangerous waste also which had been dumped. According to locals, the debris had been lying for three to six months and had not been cleared. The marshals impose Rs 1,000 fine on people dumping garbage, but why had they not noticed this? Only after I complained, the officials came running”.
