Cyclone Fengal effect: Holiday announced for schools, colleges on Tuesday in some districts

BENGALURU: Cyclone Fengal is causing heavy rain in the southern districts of Karnataka. In view of the difficulty students may face due to the rain, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in some districts on Tuesday, December 3.

The Deputy Commissioners have declared holiday for schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Udupi, Mysuru and Chikkaballapur districts on Tuesday and issued orders accordingly.

Except for the degree college where exams are being held in Chamarajanagar district, a holiday has been declared for all other colleges. A holiday has been declared only for primary, high schools and anganwadis in Chikkamagaluru.

The deputy commissioner of Bengaluru Urban district said that a holiday has not been declared for schools and colleges as the alert has been sounded for other parts of the state.

Cyclone Fengal has caused widespread destruction in neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and is also affecting Bengaluru, which is experiencing constant drizzle and cold weather.

Bengalureans, who have been experiencing occasional showers for the past two days, can expect more rain and cold weather in the next two to three days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the minimum temperature in Bengaluru will drop further and the city will experience cloudy weather, cold winds and increased chilliness throughout the day.

The effects of the cyclone Fengal will be felt in other parts of southern Karnataka. Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Kodagu and Ramanagara districts have been issued an orange alert, indicating heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The IMD also issued red alert for Kodagu. Other districts, including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Mandya, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru, have been issued a yellow alert, indicating normal rainfall.

Some parts of northern Karnataka and the coastal region can also expect normal rainfall. The weather department has advised commuters and street vendors to prepare for the rain.
