BENGALURU: In a shocking revelation, a whopping 30-40 per cent of streetlights are not functioning in the Bengaluru Central City Corporation alone. Steps are now being taken to replace them with LED lights and the corporation authorities are confident that the work will be completed in a month’s time.
Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda had recently suspended an executive engineer for failing to maintain and repair streetlights in the city after he found more than 100 streetlights not functioning on Hudson Circle Road. After that, GBA Commissioners inspected streetlights under their limits on the minister’s instructions.

It has been revealed that streetlights 30-40 per cent of streetlights are not functioning in the Central city corporation limits. Inspection has been done in many places including MG Road, Shivajinagar, Hudson Circle where streetlight poles having old connections are not working. Instruction has been given to install LED lights in such areas and warning has been given that if streetlight maintenance is not done properly, the officers concerned will be given notice as well as suspended.
“Maintenance of streetlights is being handed over to an agency and LED lights are being installed. In my estimate, 30-40 per cent of streetlights are not working and instructions have been given to the officials concerned to attend to such complaints immediately. I can monitor the functioning of streetlights from my office and if they are not replaced, the vendor will be penalised”, said Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissoner Jagadeesha G.
If 30-40 per cent of streetlights are not being maintained in the Central City Corporation alone, then one can imagine how streetlight maintenance is being done in other corporation limits of Bengaluru. It remains to be seen whether Bengaluru in-charge minister will take proper action regarding streetlight maintenance.
