BENGALURU: Ration card-holders are in a dilemma. Recently, the government ordered to cancel inelegible BPL cards. While there’s a problem on the one hand with card verification, on the other hand, people are facing issues in getting rations because of the new system. Eligible individuals who had BPL cards are struggling to get rations after the OTP system has been stopped.

Previously, BPL cardholders could get rations using their mobile number linked to the card, which would receive an OTP. However, the OTP system has been cancelled, and biometric verification is now in place.

Many ration cards, especially the elderly, are facing difficulties due to biometric verification. Therefore, many people are requesting to restore the old system.

Ashwath Lakshmi, a resident of Malleswaram, said she has not received ration for two months because biometric verification is not working. “They are sending us from one department to to another. They are refusing to give rations at the fair price shop”, she said.

Pavarti Bai, a resident of Deepanjali Nagar, also hasn’t received rice for two months due to biometric verification issues. She has requested the government revert to the OTP system. Renuka, a resident of North Bengaluru, expressed frustration over not being able to obtain rations. “I have been collecting rations for 25 years. When I added my son-in-law’s name, the card got cancelled”, she said. Renuka has requested the officials to inspect her home before giving ration.

Many are struggling with biometric verification, and some are demanding a return to OTP verification. They have urged the Food and Civil Supplies department to reconsider the OTP system to facilitate rice distribution.
