BENGALURU: A 21-year-old MBA student of BIMS College suffered grievous injuries after a car hit her and flung her at a distance in a hit-and-run case reported near RV College on January 2. The victim Swathi is now undergoing treatment at the ICU in Apollo Hospital.

Swathi was crossing the road near RV College when the speeding Volkswagen Polo car hit her and threw her at a distance, leaving her with a broken back and legs. She is now battling for life at the hospital. She is a first-year MBA student at BIMS College and her father works in the Police Department in Hubballi.

Students and other pedestrians risk their life and limb to cross the road.

Locals complained that ever since a speedbreaker at the spot was removed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit eight months ago, there has been an increase in the number of accidents. Sunil, who works at a photocopy shop and an eyewitness to the incident, pointed out that hundreds of students cross the road every day and stressed that a speedbreaker is essential.

Other locals too said that there are several educational institutions in the vicinity and a skywalk is essential and demanded that speedbreakers or traffic signals be installed to regulate fast-moving traffic. There is not even a zebra crossing for the benefit of pedestrians, they pointed out.

Swathi’s senior Devika and another student, Madhuchandra.

Swathi’s senior Devika said, “It is said that such a thing has happened to her. We heard that she has undergone surgery. It has become a huge problem for pedestrians to cross the road ever since the speedbreakers were removed as the number of accidents have increased. There is no skywalk too and it is very scary to cross the road”.

“When VIPs visit, the traffic police are here two days ahead. But they don’t do anything to regulate traffic on other days”, said Madhuchandra, another student of BIMS College.
