Karnataka to witness continuous rainfall for the next one week

BENGALURU: The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that there will be rainfall for the next eight days across the state with the south-west monsoon intensifying.

It has been raining heavily in many districts of the state and the weatherman says there will have heavy downpour for the next five days and moderate rain for the rest of the days.

As on June 21, the state had recorded 70 per cent deficit in rainfall, but now, there is no deficit as the rainfall has increased. Normally, the state receives 40.5 per cent of rainfall by this time, but it has seen 0.55 per cent more rainfall, said Indian Meteorological Department expert Prasad.

Heavy downpour has wreaked havoc, causing severe damage and loss of lives across the state. At least four people have died in ran-related incidents in different places.

A youth swept away into a ditch at Dhannur in Basavakalyana while. An old man died after the wall of his house collapsed in Kannur of Vijayapur district and a one-year-old girl died after a wall collapsed at Kumbalur in Harihar talul. A similar incident happened in Haveri too, where a three-year-old girl Bhagya Chalamarad died.

The newly constructed NH-4A highway between Belagavi and Goa collapsed before its inauguration. The Rakkasakoppa reservoir is full and Datta Mandir of Narasimhawadi is completely waterlogged. Heavy rain has also affected parts of Ballari, Vijayanagar, Bagalkot and other districts.

Water level at the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam in Srirangapatna taluk has increased to 100 feet with 5 tmcft of water flowing in over just two days. Inflow at the Kabini reservoir too has increased due to continuous rain in Wayanad. Shivamogga’s Anjanapura dam is also full and the famous Jog Falls is in all its splendour.

The Netravati river in Dakshina Kannada has exceeded the danger level while the water level in the rivers of Uttara Kannada is below the danger mark. In Kalaburagi, the Kagina river is overflowing while there is heavy discharge from Mullamari dam in Chincholi. In Dharwad, the Amblikoppa bridge has gone under water.

Many districts including Bengaluru, Chikkaballapur, Ballari, Bagalkot and Haveri have received heavy rainfall. As a result of heavy rains, holidays have been declared for schools and colleges in many taluks.
