First-year law student falls from 6th floor of college building, dies

BENGALURU: A first-year law student at the Visveswarapura College of Law died after she jumped off the sixth floor of the Bangalore Institute of Technology building, right opposite her college, in V V Puram area around 12.30 pm on Monday.

Vani was a student of the Visveswarapura College of Law.

Vani (23) sustained serious head injuries after the fall. Some students and staff heard a loud sound and alerted the authorities. She was immediately shifted to hospital by the college staff, but died enroute.

The V V Puram police, who arrived on the scene, recovered a death note from her person which revealed that she had got engaged about four months ago. However, closer to the wedding date, the fiance and his family started harassing her over some issue and the engagement was broken. Upset over this, she committed suicide, police suspect.

Vani jumped from the sixth floor of the Bangalore Institute of Technology, right opposite her college.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) P Krishnakant said, “If the parents or relatives lodge a complaint, we will investigate. Prima facie, she has fallen from the building and died. Whether it was suicide or if there was any other reason, we have to investigate. We also have to verify the death note.”

DCP Krishnakant said they are verifying the death note.

While they await the post-mortem report, the police plan to question the parents too about the motive for the suicide.
