BENGALURU: The state capital, Bengaluru Rural and several other parts of the state are expected to receive rain for the next 3-4 days, as per the weather department.
On Sunday night and early on Monday, Bengaluru witnessed continuous rain leading to waterlogging on roads and rainwater entering houses in some areas. Office-goers and college students were also affected by traffic jams and slow-moving traffic. Schools and anganwadis, however, were closed.
With depressions in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the interior parts of the state are expected to receive heavy rain and a yellow alert has been sounded for 17 districts — Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada in the coastal area, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Ballari in north-interior Karnataka, Bengaluru city, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Ramanagara and Tumakuru in south-interior Karnataka — and orange alert for Chikkamagalur and Shivamogga. Over the last week, several parts of coastal, north- and south-interior Karnataka have been experiencing continous rain.
C S Patil, scientist and director, IMD, Bengaluru, said, “Kadra in Uttara Kannada district recorded 11 cm of rain while Kundapur in Udupi district 9 cm of rain, Shiggaon in Haveri district recorded 10 cm on Sunday. South-interior Karnataka will receive widespred rain between October 21 and 23 while some parts of the coastal districts may receive rain. Bengaluru is expected to receive moderate rain in this period.”
Bengaluru is expected to witness rain on Monday (October 21) evening too after the downpour on Sunday night, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The rain, which lashed the city between Sunday night and Monday morning caused flooding of houses in Kengeri, RR Nagar, Dasarahalli, Byatarayanapura and other low-lying areas.
On Monday morning, the Okalipuram underpass witnessed about 2 feet of water while a drain wall collapsed in JJR Nagar and water entered about 10 houses in VS Garden. The road in front of RGB Tech Park in Sarjapura was also inundated, while the Sakra Hospital road, which is next to the Bellandur lake, was also under water. Several arterial roads including BTS Main Road in Shantinagar, Lavelle Road, Hulkul Residency apartment, Koramangala 80 feet road, the Koramangala indoor stadium, and several other were flooded leading to traffic chaos.
