BENGALURU: Six people, including two nursing students, were killed in separate accidents in and around the city on Saturday.
A couple died after the car they were travelling in crashed into the road divider on the highway near Doddahulluru in Hoskote taluk, Bengaluru Rural district, on Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as Shaziya Sheikh (28) from Bengaluru and Rizwan (35), who was driving the car.
It is suspected that accident occurred while the two were on a night joyride. While initially only Shaziya’s body was found, it was suspected that Rizwan may fled in fear immediately after the accident. Later, Rizwan’s body was found in a canal near the accident spot itself.
It is suspected that he was thrown from the car due to the impact and fallen into a 20-foot-deep canal. Rizwan died on the spot from the impact of the fall. Rizwan was a second-hand car dealer and both bodies were shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examination.
A woman was killed in a horrific accident in Whitefield traffic police station limits early on Saturday morning while she was taking her daughter to college.
The woman, identified as Kantha, and her daughter Neha were travelling on a two-wheeler from Marathahalli towards Siddapura when the two-wheeler skidded in a pothole on the road due to rain. A school bus coming from behind ran over mother Kantha who had fallen down.
Efforts were made to shift severely injured Kantha to a local hospital. But Kantha, who was severely injured, died on the spot. The accident was the result of a pothole and patchwork was done only after a life was lost.
The pothole had caused accidents earlier too. Locals said they have been complaining to the GBA and traffic police for a year to get the pothole closed, but to no avail. If this work had been done earlier, at least one life could have been saved, they said.
In yet another accident near R R Dental College in Kengeri, two nursing students died after their motorcycle crashed into the road divider around 3 am on Saturday. The deceased Athul Sibi and Gouri Shankar, hailing from Kerala.
The two were coming on a bike from Mysuru towards Bengaluru when they crashed into a road divider. Kengeri traffic police visited the spot and inspected.
In another accident under Kengeri traffic limits, a Maruti Eeco car rammed into two bikes from behind around 6.45 am on Mysuru Road, resulting in the death of one of the car occupants, Sukhdev (45). Three people on the bikes sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a local hospital, DCP-West Traffic Division, Anup Shetty, said.
