MADIKERI: Perhaps for the fourth time in a week, tremors were felt twice within a span of half an hour in Kodagu district on Thursday night.

The rumblings were felt in Sampaje, Peraje, Goonadka and Karike with a loud noise, causing anxiety among the villagers. Around 1.15 am and 1.45 am on Friday, tremors measuring 1.8 on the Richter scale were felt at a depth of 10 km at Chembu village. This was recorded on the gauge at Harangi dam.

Earlier, on Thursday night, tremors were felt at 10.45 pm. The recurring tremors has caused panic among the locals.

Ramesh, a member of the Chembu Gram Panchayat, said people are scared to sleep at night. “We are unsure of how to continue with our lives due to the incessant rain, landslips and tremors,” he added.

However, Virajpet MLA K G Bopaiah sought to ally fears saying that officials and scientists have visited the spot. The scientists have said there is danger only if the tremors are above 4-4.5 on the Richter scale and hence, there is no cause for worry, he said.
