BBMP to issue notice to major defaulters of property taxes, lock up premises

BENGALURU: With polling in Karnataka for the Lok Sabha elections completed, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) now plans to ramp up property tax collection. The civic body has already prepared a list of tax defaulters who owe huge amounts and will start issuing notices to them soon.

Among the defaulters include many prominent firms and individuals. After serving notices, the BBMP plans to lock up their premises if the property tax dues are not paid up. Already, one round of notices have been issued and if there is no response from the defaulters by this month-end, the civic body plans stricter action.

 

As per the BBMP’s calculation, it has to receive property taxes of Rs 35.78 crore in West zone, Rs 31.80 crore in Bommanahalli, Rs 25.10 crore in Dasarahalli, Rs 12.56 crore in South zone, Rs 8.69 crore in Mahadevapura, Rs 8.54 crore in East, Rs 8.33 crore in RR Nagar and Rs 7.22 crore in Yelahanka zones.

A total of 50 individuals/establishments owe Rs 136 crore in taxes in all. They can pay up the dues or opt for one-time settlement by July 31.
