BENGALURU: In a move to curb two-wheeler riders from riding on footpaths, the Transport department has proposed to increase the fines based on the suggestion of Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.
Transport Commissioner has written a letter to the secretary of the Transport Department seeking a 10-fold increase in penalties on owners of vehicles driving recklessly on footpaths in Bengaluru, thereby endangering the lives of pedestrians.

Presently, the fine amount is Rs 500 and it is proposed to be increased to Rs 5,000. The Transport Department has stated that after obtaining the opinion of the Law Department on the proposal, an order can be issued.
As per the proposal, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be levied for the first-time violation of the rule, Rs 10,000 fine for second violation. An official order on increasing the penalty is pending before the government.
