SHIVAMOGGA: The police shot at a murder accused near Lingapura on the Shivamogga-NR Pura road after he tried to attack a police team which had gone to arrest him, on Monday morning.

The police shot Umesh Naik (27) in the leg when they had gone to arrest him in the murder case of Kiran a.k.a Kulli Kiran. Umesh Naik allegedly tried to attack policeman Thamanna Jambagi when Tunganagar Inspector Gururaj Karki warned him not to attack and fired a shot in the air. As Umesh Naik ignored the warning, the police inspector fired at Umesh in the leg and arrested him.

The injured Umesh Naik was admitted to McGann hospital while policemam Thamanna was given preliminary treatment at the same hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Shivamogga for further treatment. A case has been registered in Tunganagar city police station regarding incident.

On Sunday evening, Kiran a.k.a. Kulli Kiran was murdered in Raminakoppa in Shivamogga by 3-4 miscreants who hacked him to death with weapons and brutally murdered him. A case registered in Tunganagar station regarding this.

Police Superintendent Nikhil B, who visited the hospital on Monday morning, said, “Yesterday, in Tunganagar station limits, a person named Kiran was murdered. In that case, the main accused Umesh Naik was taken into custody at night. While bringing the accused to the police station, he said he needs to relieve himself. Our staff Thamanna got down and was taking him in leading chain when Umesh attacked Thamanna and tried to escape”.

“Inspector Gururaj fired at Umesh’s leg as he did not heed the warning. Five people, including Umesh, Appu @ Babu Rajendra, Sunil, Bhuvan and Manoj have been arrested in the murder case. The murder was due to some financial matter and further investigation in the case is under way”, the SP added.
