SIR exercise off to a start across Karnataka from today

BENGALURU: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is taking place in the state, including Bengaluru. Mapping has already been completed and house-to-house verification will be conducted.

Election officers and booth-level officers (BLOs) will visit homes and carry out the revision. They will visit each house and provide the for for any revision in the electoral roll. Voters have to fill out the application, sign it and submit certain documents. House-to-house verification will be done from June 30 till July 29, with officials visiting homes to verify information.

Names in the voter list will be verified, corrections will be made, new names will be added, and names of the deceased and those who have relocated will be removed from the list. The BLOs will visit homes and provide the SIR application. Voters must provide information on the SIR form and sign it. Only if voters participate in the SIR and provide information they will have the right to vote; otherwise, there is a possibility of being deprived of voting.

The house-to-house verification will be held from June 30 till July 29. The draft voter list will be published by the Election Commission on August 5. There will be an opportunity to file objections and suggestions to the draft voter list from August 5 to September 4. Issuance and disposal of notices regarding claims and objections will take place from August 05 to October 03. The final voter list will be published on October 07.

There are 1,03,88,363 voters under the GBA limits and 79,27,792 voters have been mapped. Of these, 24,60,461 voters have not been mapped.

“The BLOs will visit houses every day in the morning as they will have to attend to their regular work also. After the month-long exercise, the draft voter list will be prepared. In case where the voters are uneducated and cannot fill the forms, the BLOs will help out. There are about 85-90 lakh registered voters in Bengaluru and we have identified 70 lakh voters so far who have been on the voter rolls since 2002”, said GBA Chief Commissioner M Maheshwara Rao, who is the district returning officer.
