Palike cracks the whip, fines contractor Rs 5 lakh for road work delay

BENGALURU: For the first time ever, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has decide to impose fines and cancel contracts in case of poor execution of road works.

In the first such instance, the civic body has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on a contractor for not arranging a concrete mix and other equipment in time to fill up potholes in the West zone. A complaint was lodged by West zone special commissioner Deepak with BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath who ordered cracking the whip against the contractor JMC Constructions Pvt Ltd. A notice has also been issued to BBMP Chief Engineer (roads and basic amenities) Prahlad.

The BBMP plans to fill 10,000 potholes on a war-footing before the monsoon sets in. As per the contract, 1,056 barrels of material was supposed to be supplied by mid-May, but only 220 barrels, (20 per cent) has been supplied by the contractor so far.

Chief Minster Basavaraj Bommai, who is in charge of Bengaluru development, has been apprised of the action taken against the contractor.
