One shot at, 4 arrested in Shivamogga in stabbing incident, city remains on edge

SHIVAMOGGA: The Shivamogga police on Tuesday shot at Mohammed Zabiullah, the main accused in the stabbing of Prem Singh during the clashes that followed the row over installation of a flex with the image of Veer Savarkar at Amir Ahmed Circle on Monday. The police have also have arrested Nadeem, Tanveer and Rehman in connection stabbing incident.

Zabiullah was shot in the leg by the police.

On Tuesday, when the police set out to nab Zabiullah, he flashed a knife, forcing the police to open one round of fire in the air behind Falak Palace in the city. When he tried to attack them, Zabiullah was shot in the leg by police sub-inspector Manjunath Kuri of Vinoba Nagar police station. Zabiullah was later taken to McGann hospital for treatment. It is learnt that he had suffered a fracture in the shooting incident.

While there is suspicion that he was an active member of the People’s Front of India (PFI), the police are investigating all his links.

Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Alok Kumar visited the spot of the shootout and got details from SP Lakshmiprasad. He also visited McGann hospital and spoke to Prem Singh who is in the SICU. He also checked on Zabiullah.

He told reporters, “I spoke to both of them. Prem Singh’s brother is looking after him and his parents, who are in Rajasthan, have also been informed and they will be arriving here. Both the victim and the accused are stable. Zabiullah was part of the mob at Amir Ahmed Circle. So far, we have arrested four people and others will be arrested”.

Later, Alok Kumar visited the Bheemeshwara temple along with IGP Tyagarajan and SP Lakshmiprasad.

Meanwhile, a tense atmosphere continues to prevail in Shivamogga. Prohibitory orders continue to be in force and heavy police deployment has been made in the city. All vehicles coming to and leaving the city are being thoroughly checked.

The IGP did a round the city’s sensitive spots.

Inspector General of Police (east) Tyagarajan also did a round of the city to check on the law and order situation. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) also took out a route march in the sensitive areas of the city.
