Murder convicts attack warder at Parappana Agrahara jail

BENGALURU: Five convicts in the murder case of Mangaluru Bajrang Dal activist Suhas Shetty, who are lodged in the Parappana Agrahara central prison here, assaulted jail warder Manjunath Haveli around 11.30 am on September 2.

Warder Manjunath is the subject handler related to premature release. He had gone to the convicts ward section regarding the issue when the murder convicts abused him in foul language, punched him on nose, caused bleeding injury and attempted murder him.

The attackers were identified as Mohammed Muzammil, Abdul Shafghan, Mohammed Rizwan, Nayaz and Kalandar Shafi. They allegedly dragged Manjunath to cell number 04 and assaulted him mercilessly. They then tried to murder the jail official by strongly squeezing neck and suffocating him.

However, Manjunath was rescued by other officers and staff on duty. A complaint has been filed in this regard at the Parappana Agrahara police station.

The reason for the attack is said to be the transfer of some jail inmates from security section to Annex-1 prison on the verbal orders of the jail superintendent a month ago. At this time, Manjunath had checked the belongings of inmates and had not allowed them to take extra items. An ar argument had broken out between him and the attackers at that time. Also, Manjunath was informing senior officers about illegal activities in jail and hence, he was targetted, it is said.
