Ningappa Genannavar of Mudhol after winning gold at the Asian Championship Games in Bishkek.

BAGALKOT: A wrestler from Mudhol, Ningappa Genannavar, has won gold at the Asian Championship Games in the U-17 45 kg category. He defeated four competitors to reach the finals.

In the finals held on Wednesday, Genannavar defeated Nawaz Ali of Iran. The Games are being held between June 17 and 26 at Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgistan.

The son of farm labourers, Genannavar is a SSLC student. He hails from Halingali in Rabkavi-Banahatti taluk but the family is now settled in Mudhol.

Genannavar has been training at the Jai Hanuman wrestling academy for the last seven years. He first drew attention when he came first in the state-level competition and finished third in the national competition held in Rajasthan. For the last two years, he has been undergoing training at the Indian camp in Haryana.
