BENGALURU: Visitors and jail inmates at Parappana Agrahara central jail are facing the problem of mosquito menace due to dumping of waste near the jail. The situation is such that inmates are sometimes forced to eat amid garbage. A foul smell engulfs an area of about 1 km around the place.

Parappana Agrahara central jail houses thousands of prisoners. There are hundreds of visitors every day, but heaps of garbage can be seen lying all around the jail. Residents around the central prison are fed up and have been requesting the authorities concerned to take action in this regard at the earliest possible.

Prema, a native of Parappana Agrahara and a house owner, complained, there are mounds of waste on the side of the road leading to the central jail and people use the place for open defecation. Visitors are  experiencing mosquito bites and foul smell from the dumped garbage. The beat police too are fed up with the mosquito menace.

Women who visit the jail inmates are forced to sit next to the garbage with no separate place to sit, and finish the meal amid heaps of waste. The authorities concerned should make arrangements for water supply and public toilets for the visitors, locals said.

Local resident Kavita said civic workers clean the area, but people do not maintain cleanliness around here. “The central jail officials travel on this same road every day, but they are not bothered about the cleanliness. A foul smell pervades for half kilometre around the dumping yard. There is a need for a public toilets for visitors. During the monsoon, we can’t even use this road because of the filth. We cannot even open the windows of our house due to mosquitoes. The officials of the jail should pay attention to keeping the environment clean”, Kavita said.
