BENGALURU: A history-sheeter who had been thrashed by the public while trying to steal a mangalasutra from a woman, was found dead under suspicious circumstances after he escaped from an ambulance. His body was found in lake at Dodderi village of Nelamangala taluk.
One of the two accused, Battery Jayanth, who was wanted in 22 cases, was found in the lake after escaping from a 108 ambulance while being taken to a hospital.
Two days ago, Battery Jayanth and another accused, Yathish, snatched an old woman, Lakshmi’s mangalasutra near Kuluvanahalli Gate in Nelamangala taluk and were caught by public who thrashed the duo. Locals had called 112 by which time the accused had lost consciousness at the spot due to beating.
The police, who came to spot had called 108 ambulance. They were proceeding to shift both in the ambulance to a government hospital when Jayanth and Yatish pushed the ambulance driver and escaped.
Bengaluru Rural SP Chandrakanth M V said, “The body was found on Monday evening and prima facie, it looks to be a case of drowning. The body has been sent for autopsy to Victoria Hospital. We tried to contact the victim’s family and managed to get in touch with his sister who lives in Tumakuru. Jayanth has several cases registered against him and was unmarried”.
Further, he said, “The chain-snatching victim informed her relatives and locals caught the duo at Mahimapura Gate and thrashed them. Some people called 112 and also called for an ambulance. While taking them to hospital, the duo pushed the male nurse Sachin and escaped from the ambulance when it was taking a U-turn at an underpass”.
The Nelamangala Rural Police have registered a case and sent the body of Jayanth to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination. The police are also on the lookout for the other accused Yatish.
