CHAMARAJANAGAR: An elephant calf, aged about one month, that was separated from its mother and was found wandering in Malemahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary has been shifted to Mysuru Zoo for health and safety reasons.
The elephant calf was wandering, searching for its mother, near Kanive Anjaneyaswamy Temple on the main road close to Ajjipura in Hanur taluk from Sunday. Noticing this, forest staff tried to unite the calf with its mother. But as mother elephant or herd of elephants was not traced in surroundings, the calf was safely captured, taken care of and shifted to Mysuru Zoo.
Vehicle users, who noticed the elephant calf on Sunday evening, informed Forest department officials. The Forest staff who immediately went to the spot tried to unite the calf with its mother. But as mother elephant or herd of elephants was not traced in the surroundings, the calf was safely captured and taken care of.
With the intention of tracing the mother elephant, a search operation was conducted continuously with two drones from Monday morning till evening. But it is said that mother elephant or herd of elephants was not traced. As the calf is still only one month old, it will be difficult to survive alone in the forest. Thus, Forest department has taken steps to shift it to Mysuru Zoo.
