Legendary playback singer S Janaki passes away at 88

MYSURU: Legendary playback singer S Janaki passed away at the age of 88 at a private hospital in Mysuru on Saturday. She was hospitalised eary on Saturday after she developed health complications, but did not respond to treatment and passed away on Saturday evening following cardiac arrest.

S Janaki had sung thousands of songs across films in south Indian languages. She was widely referred to as Janaki Amma and ‘Nightingale of South India’ or ‘Nightingale of India’ and had been living in Mysuru for the past few years.

She occasionally composed music and was one of the most influential singers in the history of Indian music. Her music career spannned more than six decades and she had won several awards.
