BENGALURU: The Karnataka tableau took part in the dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade at Kartavyapath in New Delhi, on Monday.
After showcasing its culture and heritage through tableaux in 13 consecutive Republic Day parades, Karnataka’s proposal to showcase its millet diversity was rejected by the Centre this year as another state also had the same theme. However, a fresh proposal, with women’s empowerment as the theme, was sent later, which was accepted.
The tableau features Padma Shri awardee Sulagitti Narasamma, a midwife from Pavagada in Tumakuru district, in the front. Narasamma has performed over 20,000 traditional deliveries for free over a 70-year period. Environmentalists Saalumarada Thimakka and Tulasi Gowda feature in the rear with description about their achievements.
Along with the tableau, Dollu Kunita artists from Shivamogga participated in the rehearsal. Nandi Dhwaja Kunita artists from the state, representing the Culture Ministry also took part.
