BENGALURU: The K R Market pedestrian subway, built at a cost of crores of rupees, has remained locked eight months after it was constructed. Pedestrians are fed up with the closed subway remaining closed, as this is a major link to other important places around KR Market.

Lakhs of people visit KR Market and surrounding places in the heart of Bengaluru as it is a major business hub. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) constructed a subway for the convenience of pedestrians to reduce traffic congestion. It has been eight months since it was constructed; since then, the main entrance has remained closed for public use and motorists are facing problems due to pedestrians on the roads.

The subway connects Kalasipalya bus stand, SJP Road, Avenue Road and KR Market and pedestrians can reach their destination without having to face traffic. However, the main entrance is closed due to a problem with the shutter and the BBMP has not bothered to fix it. Pedestrians are now demanding that problem should as soon as possible.

A pedestrian, Giridhar Nayak, said, “For elderly people like us, it is very difficult to cross the road as there is the danger of untoward incidents like accidents. The BBMP had spent lakhs of rupees on that project. Then why did they close it? If they fixed the shutter, it would be a great help for all”.

Another pedestrian, Shridhar said, “The KR Market pedestrian subway connects Avenue Road and Kalasipalya bus stand among other places. But now, it remains closed. We had requested with the authorities concerned to get the shutter repaired, but no one is taking the initiative to open it”.
