BELAGAVI: The Excise Department officials have busted a liquor racket which was smuggling cheap alcohol from Goa in fake electrical transformers.

A team led by Excise DC Vijaykumar intercepted a truck carrying two fake transformers in which several cartons of hard liquor from Goa were hidden. From the outside, the fake transformers were wrapped in plastic to look like new ones and several cartons of liquor were hidden within them.

Joint Commisioner Manjunath said that they had received information about such smuggling over the last 15 days. “Our staff were on the lookout for the truck and based on specific information, we intercepted it near Hirebagewadi and arrested the driver Sridhar, a native of Beed district in Maharashtra. The consignment was headed to Telangana through Karnataka and was being shipped from a distillery in Goa. They disconnected the GPS trackers when we stopped the truck. We are investigating as to who is behind this”, he added.
