BENGALURU: A major fire broke out at a plastic godown near Pramod Layout in Nayandanahalli on Thursday night. The three-acre plastic godown yard was completely engulfed in flames.
About 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to put out the blaze. Plastic items and more than four goods vehicles were destroyed in the fire, and the loss is estimated at over Rs 50 lakh.
The godown workers had fallen asleep and did not notice the fire. Some BBMP marshals, who were working nearby, went to the workers and warned them about the fire. The marshals and workers removed the gas cylinders from the inside to lessen the severity of the blaze.
Earlier, the locals had opposed construction of the plastic godown in the locality, but the BBMP had given its permission. After the fire accident, local residents expressed outrage against the BBMP officials. The Fire and Emergency personnel tried to put out the fire and the Bytarayanapura police visited the spot and inspected the damage.
“We are living in this layout from past 16 years. The BBMP has done a terrible job by giving licences to plastic godowns. No one is taking action against these factories and godowns. The fire engulfed the building around 11.45 pm and there have been reports of previous fires. We have opposed it many times, but to no avail”, said R Mani, a resident of Pramod Layout.
“Around 11 pm the workers called me about the fire. Till 10.20 pm, I was working at the godown, but when I returned home, they informed me about the fire. Five sheds, some trucks and other plastic items are destroyed,” said the owner of the plastic godown.
