BENGALURU: Residents of the city are up in arms against the Cabinet decision to allow 5 per cent of park land to be used for other purposes as they feel that the ‘Garden City’ is already lost and now even more green cover will be lost. Hence, Citizens for Citizens (C4C), a citizens’ forum has launched a signature campaign on Change.Org.
The state Cabinet has decided to use 5 per cent of the area of parks in Bengaluru for infrastructure works. The Citizens for Citizens forum has strongly opposed this decision of the government. The number of parks and trees in the city is decreasing day by day. In this situation, citizens have expressed outrage that if park land is also reduced, it will be even more unjust to Bengalureans.
Citizens are demanding that the government’s decision to use 5 per cent of park land for other purposes should be withdrawn immediately. The Citizens for Citizens Forum has urged to at least save the remaining green area and maintain Bengaluru’s environmental balance. A signature collection campaign has also been launched by the public against the government’s decision. Citizens have been called upon to participate in the campaign in large numbers.

In the name of development, the green area in Bengaluru has already reduced considerably. Preserving parks and trees is essential from the perspective of the city’s future. The government should immediately withdraw its decision to cut 5 per cent of park land. Otherwise, they have warned of intensifying the agitation against the government.
Rajkumar Dugar, who started the online campaing, told Public TV, “We are shocked by the Cabinet decision as Bengaluru already has very few parks and green spaces. As per the norms, the city needs to have 30,000 acres of green spaces for its population and area, but we have less than 3,000 acres. How can the government take away 5 per cent of this green space. Children have no space to play and the adults have no place to relax and connect with nature”, he said.
Further, Dugar said, “Will the government give 5 per cent of land for parks from infrastructure projects? We request the government to reverse its decision. Once upon a time, Bengaluru was known as the garden city, but due to such measures, our lakes and rajakaluves have been encroached. At least now, the government should focus on creating more green spaces than taking away land from parks”.
“Such steps will bring down the quality of life in Bengaluru whereas we should be improving it. The government should not take even an inch of land from parks for any other purpose. We need 10 times more parks and green spaces. Also, trees will be cut and redesigning parks with new boundary walls will mean additional expenses to the tune of crores of rupees. Instead, the government should look at alternatives for infrastructure projects. This is an issue which is very dear to Bengalureans, and they are upset by the move. We hope to create awareness before the issue comes before the Assembly and we will also create pressure on elected representatives”, Dugar added.
