BENGALURU: Autorickshaws, cabs and privates buses will keep off the roads on July 27 to protest against the implementation of the Shakti free travel scheme for women in government-run buses.
The Karnataka State Private Transporters’ Association has given the bandh call to protest against the loss of revenue for autorickshaw and cab drivers and also private bus operators with the implementation of the Shakti scheme.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, association president Nataraj Sharma said their protest is against the Shakti scheme, use of private vehicles for commercial purposes, open permit for two-wheelers among other issues.
“Privately run public transport has collapsed and drivers and owners of vehicles are finding it difficult to make a living, let alone pay for insurance, bank loans, permits, etc. The government is not concerned about our problems.” he said.
“The government should come out with guidelines for the Shakti scheme as private bus operators are also being affected. Only as many passengers as the number of seats should be allowed, but people are standing and travelling in buses. The government can also consider using private buses for the Shakti scheme”, he said.
Members of 23 organisations including autorickshaws, Ola, Uber and private buses were present. Kannada groups are also expected to extend their support to the bandh. A rally will also be taken out on that day.
