BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is issuing notices to commercial establishments that have failed to pay property taxes. The BBMP has sent notices to defaulters, including over 25 major Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) complexes, which owe around Rs 27 crore in taxes.
The BBMP has warned that if the taxes are not paid, the establishments and shops will be closed down. The Transport Department has been asked to take action against the defaulters. The BBMP has identified several major BMTC bus stations, including Majestic, Yeshwantpur, Shantinagar, Shivajinagar, Jayanagar, and Vijayanagar which owe taxes.
The BBMP has already identified shops at the Majestic BMTC bus station for closure due to non-payment of taxes. The Transport Department is in talks with the BBMP to pay some of the pending taxes. If the taxes are not paid, the BBMP will take action as per the rules.
Tushar Giri Nath, chief Commissioner of BBMP, said, “We have discussed with BMTC 3-4 times regarding pending taxes. We cannot give them any relaxation or exemption. We can give relaxation in service charges. They should pay tax at the full commercial rate. The Corporation has given several reasons to BBMP. The total pending tax bill is Rs 40 crore. But, after making some adjustments in dues from BBMP towards BMTC in relation to buses and land, they agreed to pay around Rs 27 crore”.
