BENGALURU: With the incessant rain, the prices of vegetables have shot up ahead of Deepavali, delivering a jolt to citizens. Sellers are not able to meet the demand and there is a short supply due to damage to standing crops.
For the first time in nine months, vegetable inflation has risen to 9.24 per cent with the prices of kitchen staples like onions, potato and tomato going up. Garlic prices have risen from RS 320 to Rs 440 per kg and onion prices are hovering around Rs 80 per kg.
In the retail market, the regular onions are being sold for Rs 58-75 per kg, sambar onions for Rs 60-85 per kg, tomato Rs 60-85, green chillies Rs 50-70, beetroot Rs 45-60, potato Rs 50-70, capsicum Rs 50-65, bittergrourd Rs 45-65 per kg.
Among other vegetables, string beans is being sold for Rs 60-80 per kg, double beans Rs 35-50, cucumber Rs 45-55, brinjal Rs 40-55, ginger Rs 75-100, ladies finger Rs 35-50, carrot Rs 50-65 and elephant foot yam at Rs 50-70 per kg.
