BENGALURU: Students at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) women’s hostel are vacating the rooms after a cholera outbreak wherein two out of 49 students were found to be infected.
Of the 49 students who fell sick at the Hostel, the culture test reports of 22 students have been received and cholera was detected in two of them. The reports of the rest of the students will be received tomorrow, and the hostel inmates are anxious.
Of them 21 hostel students were apparently being treated in the trauma care centre and are likely to be discharged today, and treatment will continue for the rest of the students. Currently, the health status of the students is stable, and two students are undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
After the detection of cholera, the parents of the students are also forcing them to return home. Due to the fear of cholera infection, some medical students are vacating the hostel with their luggage, and some are shifting to other hostels for a few days. Some students are ordering food online while some are going to out of the city and many are going to the houses of relatives and friends.
The hostel management has said that the issue will be sorted out within a week. But due to the lack of drinking water and proper food, the students have decided to stay elsewhere until the problems are solved.
Meanwhile, after Malleswaram, another cholera case has been detected in Bommanahalli. A 35-year-old man has been diagnosed with cholera. He is a driver by profession.
