MANDYA: Faced with opposition from within the party, Revenue Minister R Ashoka has recently written to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai seeking to be relieved of the charge of Mandya district.

Only on January 24, the CM had appointed Ashoka as Mandya district in-charge minister in place of Excise Minister K Gopalaiah. In his letter to the CM, Ashoka has cited the heavy work load in his department and asked to relieved of the charge of Mandya

Except for his visit on January 25 and 26, Ashoka has stayed away from Mandya. Ever since he was named in charge, he has been met with boycott calls and posters and graffiti saying ‘Go Back’.

The BJP is eyeing a win in at least 2-3 Assembly segments in Mandya district and if it fails, Ashoka would have had to take responsibility for it and this would have dented his image in the party, political watchers felt.
