Biometric system introduced for inmates on pilot basis at Parappana Agrahara prison

BENGALURU: A biometric system has been introduced at the Parappana Agrahara central prison on a pilot basis to curb illegal activities in jail. The system is being used for convicts, undertrial prisoners and even jail staff and officials.

The biometric system has been installed in every barrack, jail hospital, visitors’ room, kitchen, canteen, library, playground and bakery. Authentication is mandatory when prisoners go to the visitors’ room and information on who met whom, when, and for how long will be recorded. These steps taken to prevent illegal activities like smuggling in contraband, mobile phones, cigarettes, alcohol, etc.

Speaking about the initiative, ADGP Alok Kumar said, “We will track the movement of convicts, undertrials and even the prison staff. A report will generated like the e-beat system and it will help analyse if anyone is spending additional time at a certain place. The biometrics of the prison inmates has been taken and we now have to take the biometrics of the prison staff, which will be done in the next few days”.
