24 migrant workers rescued from bonded labour at brick kiln in Ilkal village

BAGALKOT: Twenty four migrant workers, including five child labourers, were rescued from bonded labour in Ilkal taluk of Bagalkot district.

The workers, hailing from Odisha, were being exploited at an illegal brick kiln in Sanklapur village in Ilkal taluk. The labour department and revenue officials rescued them and registered a case against the employer, Erappla Kumbara, under the Bonded Labour System Abolition Act and Child Labour Prohibition Act.

The workers were allegedly paid Rs 400 per week and denied basic facilities. They had received Rs 10 lakh as advance at Rs 25,500 per person’s wages. The authorities have sent the workers back to Odisha and are investigating the case.
