Tension in Koppal village after Ambedkar portrait found defaced

The police defused the situation on Tuesday with the arrest of one person.

KOPPAL: Tension prevailed at Kavalakeri village in Kukanur taluk after a portrait of Dr B R Ambedkar was found defaced with a garland of footwear on Monday night. The Kukanur police arrived at the village and removed the footwear garland.

For the last two days, there has been tension in the village over construction of a Bhagirath Circle. The Madiga community members alleged that miscreants garlanded the Ambedkar portrait with footwear over this dispute.

The police have arrested one individual, identified as Shivu, of the Uppara community. On Tuesday morning, Dalit women and children staged a protest in the village to condemn the defacement of the portrait.
