2 cops in dock for demanding bribe to drop names from atrocity case filed by Dwarkish’s daughter-in-law

BENGALURU: The Lokayukta police have registered an FIR against a DCRE DySP and police constable for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 each from the 19 accused in an atrocity case filed by late actor Dwarakish’s daughter-in-law, to drop their names.

A case under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, had been filed against one Sukanya and her family and friends at Rajarajeshwari Nagar Police Station in February 2026. The Bengaluru West Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) police had taken up the investigation into the case.

Deputy SP Maheshwara Gowda and Constable Basavaraj allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 each, totalling Rs 9.50 lakh, to drop from their names from the case. Audio clippings of the police demanding the bribe have now surfaced following which an FIR has been registered against Deputy SP Maheshwara Gowda and constable Basavaraj.

The complainant Sukanya told media persons, “Both the Deputy SP and constable were posted at the DCRE West police station in Shantinagar. They had demanded Rs 9.5 lakh as bribe in an atrocity case and hence, I approached the Lokayukta police and an FIR has been registered now. The Lokayukta police had planned to trap them, but they somehow got wind of it and are absconding. I have also complained the DG&IGP, police commissioner, Home minister and other authorities”.

“The two policemen would call me to Ananda Rao Circle and would demand Rs 50,000 each to file a B report and would threaten that they would force us out of the city. They would force us to switch off our phones. I have audio proof of the demand for bribes”, she added.
