DAVANAGERE: Women police personnel will now be part of night patrols in all police station limits in Davanagere, according to Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth.

The SP, who launched the initiative at the Jayadeva Circle in the city on Tuesday night, said more personnel are required for night patrol at many places. “In most places in the state, only the male personnel are posted on night patrols. Of late, there is an increase in the number of women police personnel in all police stations and deploying them will ease the shortage of personnel”, she said.

“This is a new experiment and we have more than 75 women police personnel. In the nine police stations, we have 19 patrol beats. There is a shortage of male personnel and crimes are increasing. I am also thinking of reviving the Durga squads”, Uma Prashanth said.

Woman police personnel Shaheena was enthusiastic about the initiative.

The SP also said that patrol vehicle arrangements have been made for the women personnel and they have also been briefed about steps to be taken in case of dangerous situations.

Shaheena, a constable, said, “This is the first time for us and we will follow the orders. Let’s see how it goes. Male colleagues and officers will also be with us during night patrol.
