BENGALURU: Food cart vendor T S Ningamma, who found mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme recently, is facing the prospect of eviction by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).
Ningamma has been doing business on the footpath near Hosahalli Metro and had built life under PM SVANidhi scheme. However, she was orally instructed by GBA officials not to do street-side vending and not to set up shop on Saturday.
She said, “GBA officials came on Friday and told me to remove my hotel. I have been doing business for about 20-25 years. Now, if they ask me to remove my hotel, where should I go? I might just have to drink some poison. At least they can identify a place elsewhere and we will go there and put up our hotel”.

Last Sunday, Ningamma was felicitated by GBA officials after Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned her name in the Mann Ki Baat programme. The officials also informed her to run business as usual.
“We set up this business for our livelihood. I feel someone has targeted me. I also have difficulty, and we are not violating rules”, she said added that she will not close shop come what may.
Reacting to the issue in Kalaburagi, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said, “The hotel was removed immediately after featuring in Modi’s Mann Ki Baat. It may have been removed as per Supreme Court order on clearing footpaths”.
