BELAGAVI: The Malamaruti police in Belagavi have sought divine intervention in bringing down the crime rate in their jurisdiction. On Thursday, a Ranachandi Homa and special prayers were conducted in the central hall of the police station.

Over the last one-and-half months, the Malamaruti police station has recorded the highest number of crimes in the city. Despite best efforts, the instances of crime had not come down, prompting the police personnel to conduct special puja.

Last week, a woman was disrobed and assaulted while a firing incident had occurred a few days ago. About 45 cases including murder, extortion, theft and dacoity have been reported in recent weeks. Following this, Police Inspector J M Kalimirchi organised the puja.
