Tremors jolt Jamakhandi, Vijayapura, other parts of North Karnataka districts, people panic

BAGALKOT/VIJAYAPURA: Residents of HUDCO Colony in Jamakhandi were rattled by a loud sound early in the morning, which was followed by a tremor lasting about two seconds. Initially, the residents thought that the noise was that of a tyre burst. Tremors were also felt in Tubachi village in the taluk at 6.22 am.

According to Bagalkot Deputy Commissioner P Sunil Kumar, tremors were felt in Jamakhandi, Tubachi, Savalagi, Shoorpali, Jambagi Kede in Jamakhandi taluk and Rampura and Hosur in Rabkavi-Banahatti taluk. He said the tremors, measuring 4.4 of the Richter scale, were the effect of the same happening in neighbouring Vijayapura district and added that they are in touch with the KSNDMC.

Jamakhandi tahsildar Sadashiva and other revenue officials visited Tubachi village and took stock of the situation. There has been no loss of life or property, he said.

At the same time, tremors lasting 3-4 seconds were also felt in parts of Vijayapura district. Many residents were woken up by a loud sound. The rattling was felt in Vijayapura city, Chadachan, Tikota, Basavana Bagewadi taluks and areas bordering Maharashtra.

This is for the first time in 30 years that tremors have been felt in this region. Tremors measuring 4.9 were felt at 6.22 am and again at 6.24 am, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale.

The epicentre is believed to be in Sangli, Maharashtra and was felt in Indi, Solhapur, Mumbai, Pune also.
