BENGALURU, SHIVAMOGGA: The police have busted a suspected terror module with links to the ISIS, which was planning to carry out blasts in different parts of the state. The Shivamogga Rural police have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and arrested two people while they are on the lookout for a third suspect.
The main accused Shareek, who is from Theerthahalli in the district, is absconding. The police have managed to arrest the second accused Maaz from Mangaluru and Syed Yasin from Shivamogga. The duo was produced before court and given to police custody for seven days.
Syed Yasin, an engineering student, is believed to have knowledge of assembling a bomb and even had videos on how to assemble bombs. He is even accused of giving training to others.
The accused were allegedly plotting to commit acts of terror. The police have also got evidence of the trio burning the national flag and have registered a case under the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act.
Syed Yasin’s mother Waseena Khanum claimed that he is innocent and added that he had gone on a trip to an undisclosed location 15 days ago and had not returned home. “He had told us that network coverage may be bad. We don’t know where he had gone. We came to know about the arrest through the media”. She also blamed Maaz and the others for her son’s troubles.
Shivamogga SP Lakshmiprasad said, “Maaz and Yasin have been arrested and produced before a court which has remanded them to seven days in police custody. Shareek is absconding. We still have to conduct search and seizure operation.
“Maaz and Shareek were involved in a case of inflammatory grafitti in 2020 and are out on bail. We have to verify their background. The FIR against the three has been registered for plotting terror attacks under the influence of a banned terrorist organisation. We came to know about their activities while investigating a stabbing case,” he added.
