Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said in Shivamogga that the government is seriously considering implementing Uniform Civil Code.

SHIVAMOGGA, BENGALURU: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said that his government is seriously considering implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

Speaking to mediapersons in Shivamogga, the CM said, “We have been talking about the Uniform Civil Code right from the days of Bharatiya Jan Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya”.

Deendayal Upadhyaya was a proponent of ‘integral humanism’. The Bharatiya Jan Sangh is the forerunner of Bharatiya Janata Party.

KPCC president D K Shivakumar insisted that the voter data theft case should be discussed first.

Referring to the anti-conversion law, the CM said that even the Supreme Court has ruled against forceful religious conversion. “The Opposition spoke about it for days, but we were firm and now the people are benefiting from it”, he said.

Reacting to the Chief Minister’s remarks on UCC, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said, “First, let’s talk about the voter data theft. I will not talk about implementation of UCC right now. That is a much bigger issue. I will discuss with Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and we will decide what our stand should be as a political party”.
