NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to list a plea challenging the Karnataka government’s decision to scrap the 4 per cent reservation given to Muslims in the state under the OBC quota.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the plea before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala. Sibal said the petition is against the 4 per cent reservation being cancelled and apprised the court that defects in the petition have been removed. “We will list it,” CJI Chandrachud said.

The Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka recently scrapped the 4 per cent reservation given to Muslims under the Other Backward Classes quota and distributed it to the two dominant communities, Veerashaiva-Lingayats and Vokkaligas. The government also decided to move OBC Muslims to the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. (ANI)
