BENGALURU: A part of the road next to Sankey Tank, between Malleswaram to Bhashyam Circle, caved in after heavy rain in the city on Saturday night.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) poor road construction is being blamed for the mess, which put motorists at risk.
The Sankey Tank Road was relaid just about one-and-half months ago and it caved in after Saturday’s rain. This is the fourth road to cave in after heavy rain. Similar scenes can be seen on the roads in Kengeri and Marathahalli. Even the road between Sadashivanagar and Yeshwantpur is in bad shape and motorists dread further damage to the road.
On Palace Road, as a 30-metre length of the compound wall at the CID office collapsed due to overnight rain. However, there was not much damage as it happened at night and there was less traffic.
After the road collapsed, the corporation repaved the Sankey Tank Road with wet mixture in an effort to limit further damage. However, commuters are still at risk when using these roads.
On Monday, chief engineer of the BBMP Lake Division, Sasikumar, visited Sankey Tank Road and inspected the work undertaken. It was decided there itself by the BBMP officials to enlist the services of a private agency to determine whether poor road conditions or old tree roots are the causes of road collapse, and to give suggestion. A report will be submitted to the authorities soon.
