BENGALURU: Amid the demand from milk unions and farmers for hiking milk prices in state, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has instructed Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) officials to submit a report on the prevailing condition of dairy farmers and is expected to give a green signal for price hike soon.
After the recent protest, milk union authorities, who met the CM, had submitted a request for a price hike. Following this, the government also has started preparation for a price hike.
Compared to other states, less price is being given to farmers in Karnataka. Amid the increasing expenses, it is becoming a challenge for farmers. In this same background, following unions’ insistence, the CM has instructed to prepare report about current condition of farmers, status of KMF expenses, etc. Not only that, the CM has instructed KMF to prepare a report about how much price hike would be appropriate as per current condition of unions, including neighboring states, and the report is likely to reach CM soon.

Compared to other states, farmers in Karnataka are getting lesser and this has become a challenge for farmers who depend on dairy farming. Along with this, the monsoon also failed this time and cattle rearing has become difficult. With the summer months ahead, dairy farming will decline and scarcity for milk also may arise.
Sixteen milk unions affilaited to the KMF have requested the government to hilke milk price by Rs 8-10 Rs per litre. The KMF general body meeting is scheduled on Friday and all union farmers are also expected to participate. An order on the price hike will be issued only after a green signal from the government.
Bangalore Milk Union (Bamul) director Nagaraj told Public TV, “Already, we have placed two proposals before the government — to increase incentive to farmers from Rs 5 to 7 and hiking milk price. Compared to Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi, the price is Rs 10-15 less per litre in Karnataka. The government has already sent price hike proposal to the secretary and it is being discussed. At present, no meeting has been called with us. The government should take a decision regarding price hike soon”.
