CHIKKABALLAPUR: A man shot his nephew and attacked his elder brother with a machete, killing both of them, when the nephew was heading out for prayers around 5.30 am at Hampasandra village in Gudibande taluk on Wednesday. The man even tried to murder his own wife and children who are in Bagepalli, but was unsuccessful.

Basheer Ahmed, who has since been arrested, first shot at his nephew Nazeer Ahmed with a countrymade pistol. When Nazeer’s father Mehmoobsab stepped out after hearing the noise of gunfire, Basheer attempted to shoot him too, but failed. He then went after Mehmoobsab with a machete and attacked him. A grievously Mehmoobsab died later at Nimhans hospital in Bengaluru.

Basheer then headed to Bagepalli with an intention to kill his wife and children, who were at her parental home. But, by then, his wife Shahida had come to know of what had happened in Hampasandra over phone and did not open the door. Basheer was later arrested by the Bagepalli police.

Chikkaballapur SP Kushal Choksi said, Mehboobsab (90) has four sibling and Basheer (65) was the youngest. “There was a property dispute in the family. Early on Wednesday, Basheer first fired at Nazeer with an illegal weapon and also attacked him with a machete, killing him on the spot. He then tried to fire at Mehboobsab who came out of the house, but as the pistol did not fire, he attacked Mehboobsab with the same machete. He then went to Bagepalli and tried to attack the wife, but the police caught him and recovered the weapons”.

During questioning, Basheer told the police that he did not get the rightful share of their ancestral property due to which he attacked his elder brother and nephew. He also said that he suspected his wife of infidelity and hence wanted to kill her and their children.

Basheer, worked as a tailor in Saudi Arabia and visited home once in 5-6 years. He had shifted back about nine years ago. He had allegedly planned to carry out the killings 4-5 years ago and had even gone to Bihar where he bought a countrymade gun and took training in shooting. But the gun did not work and he had to give up his plan. Recently, he had purchased another pistol with which he shot his nephew. The Gudibande police have registered a case and taken up further investigation.
