UDUPI: A man killed both his parents by hitting them with a hammer in Brahmavar, Udupi district on Sunday night. He spent the whole night sitting with the dead bodies, and on Monday morning, he himself called the police and surrendered.
The double murder created a stir early in the morning at Gandhinagar of Baikady village in Brahmavar taluk. Shahid Ali (31) killed his father Mehboob and mother Shamshad Begum by hitting them with a hammer around 7 pm on Sunday after having an argument with them. He brutally beat his parents and killed both of them and then wrapped them in a rug and kept them.
On Monday morning, he himself called 112 and called the police saying there is a problem. Police, who rushed to the spot were shocked to see two dead bodies lying. They took the accused Shahid Ali, who was at the spot, into custody. Brahmavar police are interrogating him.
The accused Shahid Ali was working as a food delivery worker. He was not married, mostly remained alone and was always glued to his mobile. When police asked why he killed, he said his parents were mentally torturing him. He complained that they also assaulted him physically.
But locals have a good opinion about the parents. Mehboob, who worked as a driver in a fish lorry in Malpe, was a hardworking man. His wife had good relations with villagers and relatives. But Shahid Ali did not mingle much with anyone.
After this incident, villagers have drawn attention to his mobile addiction. There is suspicion that he had fallen prey to some mobile gaming addiction that affects the mind. Police need to investigate this, seeing how brutally he hit with a hammer, there is suspicion that this act may have been committed due to mobile gaming.
Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that an investigation will be conducted into whether Shahid had consumed any intoxicant at the time of committing the crime, as youth in the Gandhinagar area have fallen prey to ganja addiction. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and the accused is in police custody. Residents of hundreds of houses in Gandhinagar colony are in shock due to the tragic incident.
