Man arrested for extorting motorist of Rs 1 lakh after faking accident

The accused would fake accidents and extort motorists.

BENGALURU: A man who had fleeced a motorist of Rs 1 lakh after faking an accident has been arrested by the Jayanagar police. The arrested has been identified as Jameel Khan.

On November 14, an elderly person, Srinivas, and his wife were travelling in their car on Kanakapura Road when Jameel scraped the car from with the two-wheeler behind near JSS Circle. He then argued with Srinivas that the car had brushed against his vehicle and raised a ruckus demanding Rs 1 lakh claiming that his child was unwell.

Jameel threatened Srinivas and his wife and forcibly got them to make an online transfer of Rs 1 lakh. When the couple went to the Jayanagar police station to lodge a complaint, they came to know that Jameel had fleeced others in similar fashion.  He has since been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Further investigation is under way.

The accused would graze other vehicles with his two-wheeler and pick a fight. He would then threaten them and extort them. Four cases have been registered against him in the South division itself and we have recovered Rs 50,000 so far. He is presently in judicial cusody and hails from Mysuru district. He was doing some odd jobs in Bengaluru, DCP (South) Lokesh B Jagalasar said.

According to police sources, Jameel had threatened and extorted money from seven motorists by faking accidents. In all, 20 cases have been registered against him in KRS, Ashokapuram, Metagalli, Kuvempunagar and Saraswathipuram in Mysuru, Maddur, Bilikere, Srirangapatna, Chandra Layout, Kumbalgod, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Basavanagudi and Siddapura in Bengaluru.
